When a buyer asks AI where to buy a tractor, does it say your name?

Most dealers have never checked. In the towns around them, most are not named.

A real check One tractor dealer, unnamed. October 2026.

How buyers actually search for equipment now

Buyers used to search, scroll, and click. Increasingly they ask: "where can I buy a Mahindra tractor near me?" and take the answer. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, and Google's AI Overviews all answer that question right now, for your town, today. One of them is naming a dealership. The question is whether it is yours.

Why dealers go missing outside their own town

AI tools build their answers from what they can read online: your website, your Google listing, directories, your manufacturer's dealer locator, and sites they already trust.

Some dealer websites fill in their pages only after they load, and the major AI tools don't wait for that, so they see a blank page. Your location pages are the same template every dealer gets. Dealer Spike, TracTru's Thrive, Sandhills and the rest were built to run a dealership, not to answer a buyer's question about the town next door.

So a dealer with a perfectly good website can be left out of the answer a buyer gets.

How we get a dealership named in AI answers

  1. Measure first.

We ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Google’s AI, Perplexity and Claude the same ten questions a buyer would: two about your own town, and eight about the four largest nearby towns where you have no store. Some questions name your brand and some just ask for a tractor dealer. You see which answers name you, where you came in the list, and who came before you.

  2. Build what AI tools can read.

A page for every town and line you sell, each written for that place, not the same paragraph with the town name swapped. Each page carries a short, hidden block of details that tells search engines and AI tools plainly who you are, where you are, what lines you carry and what you service. Plus answers to the questions buyers ask before they visit.

  3. Make every listing say the same thing.

Your name, address, phone and hours should match on your Google listing, the directories and your manufacturer’s dealer locator. When they disagree, AI tools trust you less.

  4. Re-test every month.

Same questions, same AI tools. When you start being named for "Mahindra dealer near me" in your county, you see the month it happened.

Which AI tools we test, and why those five

ChatGPT
The most-used AI assistant, and it searches the web. Most "where can I buy" questions land here.
Google AI Overviews
The AI answer Google shows above its normal results, whether the buyer asked for it or not.
Gemini
Google's own AI assistant, built into Android phones and Google apps.
Perplexity
It lists the sites it used, so when you are left out, we can see who it read instead.
Claude
It reads the web differently from the others, so it catches what they miss.

The five find their answers in different ways, so being named by several of them means you are really there, not a fluke of one.

What we found

Brand names carry weight. Unbranded is where dealers go missing.

In October 2026 we asked the five AI tools about the towns around nine large independent tractor dealers, three each on Dealer Spike, Thrive and Sandhills. When the buyer asked for the brand, the dealer was named in 95 of 180 answers. When the buyer asked for a tractor dealer, 67 of 180.

The brand search was ahead on every platform. Your manufacturer's dealer network gets you found when a buyer asks for the brand. When they don't, you are on your own, and that is where we work.

Three tests decide who gets named

  1. Can it read you?

An AI tool that can’t open your page can’t mention it. Some dealer websites block AI tools by default, a setting nobody at the dealership chose. And a December 2024 study by Vercel found that none of the major AI tools ran the scripts that fill in a page, so a page that fills itself in after loading can look empty to them.

  2. Can it tell who you are?

Two stores whose address, phone or name disagree between your site, your Google profiles and the dealer locators look like guesswork to an AI tool, and guesswork does not get cited.

  3. Have you said anything worth quoting?

Expired promotions and the same blog every dealer runs give an AI tool no reason to pick you. Which store is nearer to a town, how long the drive is and what a package includes are specific enough to be quoted.

From our own checks

Most of what AI says about you comes from somewhere else

Across 901 AI answers from our checks in October 2026, these are the kinds of sites the AI tools drew on, alongside dealers' own websites.

Share of 901 AI answers drawing on each kind of site, October 2026
Kind of siteShare of answers
Manufacturer sites and dealer locatorsKubota, Mahindra and the like 66%
Business directories and review sitesYellow Pages, BBB, Yelp 63%
Equipment marketplacesFastline, TractorHouse, Equipment Trader 59%
Facebook and other social sites 28%
Reddit and owner forums 20%

Each AI tool leans on its own mix. ChatGPT drew on Reddit in 161 of 220 answers; Gemini almost never did. That is why we test five, not one.

It is also why the work goes beyond your website: your manufacturer's dealer locator, your directory listings and your marketplace listings should all say the same thing about who you are, where you are and what you carry. Reddit and the owner forums cannot be bought, and we do not try. A dealer worth recommending gets recommended there.

What we will not tell you

Nobody can sell you a guaranteed place in an AI answer. There is no ranking to buy, and these systems change without notice. What we can do is make your dealership easy to read, easy to identify and worth quoting, and show you honestly what the AI tools say, the same questions every time.

What this looked like for one dealer

Buyers are already arriving from AI. On one dealer's site we track, visitors sent by AI assistants show up as their own group in the traffic reports. The dealers named now are likely to be the ones AI keeps naming.
