Where AI gets its answers about equipment dealers

By Roger Pemberton · October 21, 2026

When a buyer asks ChatGPT where to buy a tractor, the answer doesn’t come out of thin air. The AI tool reads websites and puts its answer together from what it finds.

Some of those websites are yours. Most of them aren’t.

What we counted

Across 901 AI answers from our checks in October 2026, we wrote down which kinds of sites each answer pulled from, besides dealers’ own websites. An answer counts once for each kind of site it used.

Kind of site Share of answers
Manufacturer sites and dealer locators (Kubota, and the like) 66%
Business directories and review sites (Yellow Pages, BBB, Yelp) 63%
Equipment marketplaces (Fastline, TractorHouse, Equipment Trader) 59%
Facebook and other social sites 28%
Reddit and owner forums 20%

Every AI tool has its own habits

The tools don’t all read the same places. ChatGPT pulled from Reddit in 161 of 220 answers. Gemini hardly ever did.

That’s one reason a dealer can get named by one tool and left out by another on the same question. It’s also why we test five tools, not one.

What this means for you

Most of what an AI tool says about your dealership comes from places you don’t control day to day. But you can make sure they all agree with each other.

  • Your manufacturer’s dealer locator. Check your listing for every brand you carry.
  • Directories and review sites. Look your dealership up on Yellow Pages, BBB and Yelp. Fix any old address, phone number or store you’ve closed.
  • Equipment marketplaces. If you list machines on Fastline, TractorHouse or Equipment Trader, make sure your dealership’s name and phone number are written the same way there as everywhere else.
  • Your Google listing. It should match all of the above exactly.

When these don’t agree, an AI tool can’t tell which one’s right, and a dealer it can’t pin down is easy to leave out.

What you can’t buy

You can’t buy your way onto Reddit or the owner forums, and you shouldn’t try. Posting about yourself there usually backfires. A dealer worth recommending gets recommended there by the people who bought from them.
