How to find out what ChatGPT says about your dealership

By Roger Pemberton · October 28, 2026

More buyers are skipping the list of links and asking an AI tool where to buy. “Who sells tractors near me?” “Where’s the best place to buy a zero-turn around here?” The tool answers with a few dealer names, and the buyer usually starts with the first one.

Most dealers have never checked what those answers say. It takes about twenty minutes.

Where to ask

Use the free versions. That’s what most buyers use.

  • ChatGPT (chatgpt.com)
  • Google: just a regular search. If an AI answer shows up at the top, that counts.
  • Gemini (gemini.google.com)
  • Perplexity (perplexity.ai)

If you use ChatGPT a lot yourself, start a temporary chat so it doesn’t answer from what it already knows about you.

Ask like a buyer, not like the owner

Don’t ask about your dealership by name. A buyer who already knows your name doesn’t need to ask. Ask the way somebody who’s never heard of you would:

  1. Your own town. “Who’s the best tractor dealer near” your town. You’ll probably come up. That’s your baseline.
  2. A nearby town without a store. Pick the biggest town twenty to forty miles out where you don’t have a store. Ask the same question.
  3. With and without your brand. Ask once for your brand by name, and once for just “tractor dealer”. The answers are often way different.
  4. Something you sell besides tractors. Mowers, side-by-sides, implements, whatever you carry.

Ask each question more than once. AI tools give a slightly different answer every time, so one answer could just be luck.

What to write down

For each answer:

  • Were you named?
  • Where in the list? First, or fifth? Buyers act on the first one or two.
  • Who came before you? Write the names down. That’s your real competition for that town.

What the answers usually show

When we ran this for one tractor dealer, it came up first in every answer about its own town, and first in only 4 of 40 answers about the four towns around it. That’s a common pattern. The answers about your own town look fine. The towns next door are where buyers are getting sent somewhere else.
