The towns around you matter more than your own

By Roger Pemberton · October 26, 2026

Ask most dealers how they show up on Google and they’ll search their own town. They come up first, and they move on.

That’s the one search you were always going to win. Your store’s there, your Google listing’s there, your manufacturer’s dealer locator puts you there. Everything points at you.

The buyers you’re losing are searching from somewhere else.

Most town searches name a town without a store

For one of our clients, a two-location dealer in Texas, we looked at every search that brought up the pages we built. 88% of the searches that named a town named one where the dealer doesn’t have a store.

Buyers search town by town. A buyer twenty miles out types “tractor dealer near” and their own town, not yours.

AI does the same thing

In October 2026 we ran our standard check for one tractor dealer, who we’re not naming here. We asked five AI tools, ChatGPT, Gemini, Google’s AI, Perplexity and Claude, ten questions a buyer would ask: two about the dealer’s home town, and eight about the four biggest towns nearby where it doesn’t have a store.

  • Home town: the dealer was named first in 10 of 10 answers.
  • The four nearby towns: named first in 4 of 40. It got named in 14, usually after a competitor.

Same dealer, same website, same day. The only thing that changed was the town in the question.

Why it happens

Google and the AI tools need something that ties you to a town before they’ll name you there. In your own town that’s easy. Your address does it.

In the next town over, nothing does. Your location pages say where your stores are. Your inventory pages talk about machines. Nothing on a typical dealer website says, “We serve buyers in this town, and here’s why it’s worth the drive.”

So the answer goes to whoever does say it, or to whichever dealer happens to be closer.

What changes it

A page for that town, written for that town. Not the same paragraph with the name swapped out, but what’s actually true there: how long the drive is, which of your stores is closer, what buyers in that area tend to shop for.

For one of our clients, pages like that showed up in Google searches across 184 Texas towns in a single month.

Check it yourself

Pick a town twenty or thirty miles from your closest store. Ask ChatGPT, “Who’s the best tractor dealer near” that town. Then search the same thing on Google.

If you’re not in the answer, or you’re fourth, you’ve found where your buyers are going.
